The temperature in Antarctica is increasing

U No study published in the latest edition of the journal Nature argues that Antarctica temperature increased 0.6 degrees C over the past 50 years. The research contradicts the studies conducted so far who said that while the Antarctic Peninsula was warming, the rest of the continent is colder. .

L the brands rose by an average of 0.12 º C per decade. To reach that figure, combined with meteorological data and infrared satellite measurements determined the evolution of temperatures between 1957 and 2006 with the help of several statistical methods.

other A study conducted at the University of California, showed that the annual cycle ran in the last 50 years 1.7 days, so spring and autumn in the time ahead. It also provides that narrowed the differences between summer and winter temperatures.

United States authorized the first human trial with embryonic stem cells

L a charge will be company Geron Corp, those stem cells tested in eight or ten people paralyzed from the chest down who have suffered the injury between about seven and fourteen days ago.

E n principle, the tests are intended to discover whether the application of embryonic stem cells (or stem cells) is safe for the patient. In addition, we verify whether there is any kind of improvement and if they regenerate damaged nerves, making the sensitivity and even patients recover movement. E

ste method was approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA ) of EE. UU. With this approval marks a turning point between the new administration of Barack Obama who hinted before taking presidency that made more flexible restrictions on stem cell research.

L the FDA approved the test after reviewing 22,000 pages a year in which the company says it has been working with animals to demonstrate that embryonic stem cells cause tumors in tests on animals so far.

L to state funding of stem cell experiments in the United States was banned until August 2001, when Bush authorized it but only with cell lines already in existence.

STEM CELLS, STEM CELLS or STEM CELLS: a cell that has the ability to self-renew through mitotic divisions or continue the differentiation pathway for which is scheduled and one or more roduce mature tissues, functional and fully differentiated according to their degree of multipotency.
Most tissues of an adult have a very specific population of stem cells that allow the replacement or regeneration when tissue damage occurs. Some adult stem cells are capable of differentiating into more than one cell type while others are believed to direct precursor cells in the tissue in which they find themselves.

Embryonic stem cells are those that form part of the inner cell mass of an embryo 4-5 days of age and have the ability to form all cell types of an adult organism. A key characteristic of embryonic stem cells is that they can remain indefinitely. Since the split always form a cell identical to themselves, always maintaining a stable population of stem cells.

Theater for the Deaf in

D rom on Thursday 22 January at the Teatro Solís de Montevideo, deaf people can participate in performances of "The English Lover" by Marguerite Duras. For the first time in Uruguay, the work will be simultaneously translated into sign language through a specially created device.

E l device consists of adding a monitor to one of the boxes, where deaf people see the interpreter translating the dialogue into sign language, while enjoying the work on stage. The monitor is connected to a camera located two floors below, closed circuit that emits the image of the interpreter who is doing the direct translation.

E l assistance device allows deaf people to nine function. In this first adaptation in addition to being hearing impaired viewers will share their opinion about the procedure, a view that is essential for a research process that aims to deepen this practice in the Solís Theatre and other theaters in the country.

E sta initiative is part of a series of actions that the Secretariat of the disability of the Municipality of Montevideo held in 2009, together with institutions and social organizations in order to generate processes of inclusion of persons with disabilities in society.

Tickets for "The English Lover" are free for deaf people, who should get them in the organizations that nucleate. The functions will be on Thursday 23, Friday 24 and Saturday January 25 at the time 21.30.

Hispanic solenodonte videotaped first

U No Hispanic solenodonte shown to visitors for the first time images (above) released this week by the Durrell Wildlife Conservation Trust , based in the UK The animal conservation group captured during a survey of species in the Dominican Republic. After taking DNA samples and video footage, the team left the solenodonte recaptured in the wild. The animal, much like a shrew, also secretes venom through specialized teeth. It is one of the few living mammals that use poison as a mechanism defense, the other species that use it are the true shrew and platypus.

S and thinks the Hispanic solenodonte is the latest in a line of early mammals that came near the end of the reign of the dinosaurs 65 million years ago. The species, which is part of the Red List of endangered species prepared by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN ), has become increasingly rare in its range in Cuba Haiti and the Dominican Republic. The population is declining due to loss their natural habitat, hunting and introduced predators like mongooses, dogs and cats in the Caribbean.

Takes Mate! Evolution

U na scientific research conducted in the province of Misiones, Argentina established that this infusion has a high percentage of total polyphenols, a substance that retards cellular aging and protects the Ogan from some diseases. Polyphenols are powerful antioxidants you improve the body's natural defenses and protect against cell damage that causes deterioration of the body and disease development. T

environmental established that increased intake of the 25 existing polyphenols maté (Ilex paraguariensis ) is accomplished with a frosted made with 50 grams of pot and a pint of water at 70 degrees. This study established that yerba mate contains a significantly higher amount of polyphenols than red wine.

centers O benefits of antioxidants for health: prevent diabetes, cardiovascular diseases and coronary and some cancers .

POLYPHENOLS:
are a group of chemicals found in plants and characterized by the presence of more than one phenol group per molecule. Were Conod for a short period as vitamin P, but found that they were essential and were reclassified. Research indicates that polyphenols may have antioxidant activity with potential health benefits. Could reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease and cancer.

Will Panadol Kill A Dog?

As would happen again if

U n study published in Nature Genetics corroborates genetically unique character of evolution. The idea was to recreate the natural selection live in a lab fruit fly (Drosophila melanogaster ) which is possible due to the short life span they have.

D uring two decades, his descendants grew in the laboratory under different environmental stress stimuli and then be returned to their ancestral environment. Along 50 generations of flies, the researchers looked at whether evolutionary process could be "reversed" to return to their ancestral habitat.

P ara this, the scientists examined the chromosome 3. Indeed, the flies showed regressive changes to his sources, but only to a point where this "reversible evolution" seems to stop when fly populations are adapted to the ancestral environment. At the genetic level, the convergence to the ancestral state is 50%.

L you results suggest that the evolution of alleles at more "repeatable" that evolution resulting from gene mutations (remember that they occur by chance).

infant without breast cancer gene

The first British baby genetically selected to not carry the breast cancer gene born London. Both mother and child were subjected to treatment preimplantation diagnosis (PGD) that prevented parents transmit the gene (BRCA1) predisposing to the disease.

's father carries the gene small and three generations of female relatives were diagnosed with the tumor. Without the intervention of science, she would have had between 50 and 80 percent chance of developing it.
